Following the release of Blumhouse’s and Atomic Monster’s The Monkey, we’ve been considering other toys that could be adapted into haunting horror films. With movies like M3GAN and Chucky already out there, the partnership between Osgood Perkins and The Monkey has given Stephen King and horror fans something to look forward to, thanks to the filmmaker’s dark humor and bloody storytelling. So, what other toys have the potential for a horror twist?

There are numerous childhood toys that could be paired with the horror genre, and while some may have specific intellectual property rights that would prevent their use in a horror film, there are plenty of creative ways to work around this. For example, Annabelle was inspired by stories of a haunted Raggedy Ann doll. Here are five toys that we believe could be adapted into frightening horror movies.

The Slime Cult

Modern kids are obsessed with slime, and it’s not hard to see why. The gooey texture and endless possibilities for creativity make it a perfect candidate for a horror movie. A film about a slime cult that controls kids through ASMR videos could be a terrifying and thought-provoking commentary on the dangers of obsession. Coralie Fargeat, director of The Substance, would be an excellent choice to bring this concept to life.

Furby

The creepy and kooky design of Furbies makes them a perfect candidate for a horror movie. Taika Waititi would be an excellent director to bring this concept to life, and the film could explore the idea of a Furby that becomes self-aware and starts to wreak havoc on its owners. The fact that Furbies were known to malfunction and make strange noises only adds to their creepy factor.

Tickle Me Elmo

While Sesame Street would never allow Elmo to be the center of a horror film, a similar toy could be used to tell a terrifying story. The idea of a haunted Elmo that urges children to harm themselves or others is a chilling concept that could be explored in a film. Jane Schoenbrun, director of I Saw the TV Glow, would be an excellent choice to bring this concept to life.

Cabbage Patch Kids

A horror film about Cabbage Patch Kids could explore the idea of a family who uploads their deceased child’s consciousness into a doll, only to have it become self-aware and start to wreak havoc. Zoe Kravitz, who showed her acting chops in Blink Twice, would be an excellent choice to star in this film.

Huggy Wuggy

Huggy Wuggy, a character from the indie horror game Poppy’s Playtime, has become a viral sensation, and its creepy design makes it a perfect candidate for a horror movie. A film that explores the idea of a Huggy Wuggy that becomes self-aware and starts to wreak havoc on its owners could be a terrifying and thought-provoking commentary on the dangers of obsession. Michael Dougherty, director of Trick ‘r Treat, would be an excellent choice to bring this concept to life.

The Monkey hits theaters on February 21, and while we wait, we can’t help but think about the other toys that could be adapted into horror films. Some variation of the toys mentioned above can be found on toy shelves everywhere, but be warned: they might just come to life and haunt your dreams.
