Cybersecurity Firm Discovers Sensitive Data from Chinese AI Startup Exposed on the Open Internet

A Critical Security Breach

A New York-based cybersecurity firm, Wiz, has discovered a significant security breach involving a Chinese artificial intelligence startup, DeepSeek. The company’s infrastructure was found to have inadvertently exposed over a million lines of sensitive data, including digital software keys and chat logs, to the open internet.

The Breach

In a blog post published on Wednesday, Wiz revealed that its scans of DeepSeek’s infrastructure showed that the company had left the data unsecured. The exposed data included digital software keys and chat logs that appeared to capture prompts being sent from users to the company’s free AI assistant.

Quick Response

DeepSeek quickly secured the data after Wiz alerted them. "They took it down in less than an hour," said Ami Luttwak, Wiz’s chief technology officer. However, Wiz believes that this breach was not an isolated incident, stating, "We believe we’re not the only ones who found it."

The Implications

DeepSeek’s rapid success following the launch of its AI assistant has sparked both excitement and concern in China and the United States. The Chinese company’s apparent ability to match OpenAI’s capabilities at a much lower cost has raised questions about the sustainability of the business models and profit margins of U.S. AI giants such as Nvidia and Microsoft.

Global Market Impact

By Monday, DeepSeek had overtaken U.S. rival ChatGPT in downloads from Apple’s App Store, triggering a global selloff in tech shares.
