The release of Saw X in 2023 marked a refreshing shift in the direction of the James Wan and Leigh Whannell-created series. By taking the form of an “interquel” set between the first two films, it provided an opportunity to delve deeper into the character of John Kramer, played by Tobin Bell, who is deceased in the current franchise continuity. The film received critical acclaim and was a commercial success. However, it appears that this was not enough to revitalize the 21-year-old horror series, as the planned Saw XI is reportedly no longer moving forward.
A source has informed Bloody Disgusting that Saw XI is “totally dead” and has been so for nearly a year.
This news comes as a surprise, given that despite the film’s release date being pushed back – with the most recent date set for September 2025 – Tobin Bell had expressed his enthusiasm for the project in interviews as recently as late last year. In an interview with the LA Times, Bell stated that he was “excited” to explore more of John Kramer’s world. Furthermore, Saw XI was expected to see the return of director Kevin Greutert, who had previously helmed the well-received Saw X, as well as earlier entries Saw VI and Saw 3D.
According to the source, who spoke to Bloody Disgusting on the condition of anonymity, the production of Saw XI encountered difficulties in January 2024, with producers disagreeing on the direction of the film. The source further stated that Lionsgate was unable to find a resolution to the dispute. Although there is a possibility that the franchise may find new life at a different studio, the source believes that any future projects would likely involve a reboot rather than a continuation of the existing story.
