Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League’s Promotional Push Has Me Longing for a Different Anime Adaptation

The original Batman Ninja was an entertainingly absurd experience, and its upcoming sequel, Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, seems to be just as playful. However, Warner Bros. Japan may have inadvertently dampened my enthusiasm for it by showing me something I desperately wish I could have instead.

As part of the promotional campaign for Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, which is set to release next week, Warner Bros. Japan has unveiled a mock opening sequence for Go! Bat Phoenix, a hypothetical DC anime series inspired by classics like Science Ninja Team Gatchaman and Voltes V. The short clip features a catchy theme song and showcases Batman, Red Hood, Nightwing, and Red Robin joining forces in a delightfully over-the-top launch sequence, combining their individual vehicles to form the Bat Phoenix, essentially a souped-up Batwing.

The atmosphere is impeccable. The intentionally distressed film print effect, the simplified yet recognizable character designs inspired by Batman Ninja (Dick’s hair, in particular, is a wonderful nod to Speed Racer or Captain Tsubasa), and the dramatic posing during the launch sequence all contribute to a loving tribute to classic anime. Moreover, it’s a perfect fit for the Batman character, who has a rich history of embracing retro charm.

Batman’s affinity for this type of retro aesthetic is not unprecedented, drawing parallels to the nostalgic appreciation of the 1966 Batman TV series and Jiro Kuwata’s Batman manga. The character’s interpretation in Go! Bat Phoenix feels like a natural extension of his swashbuckling, golden age-inspired persona, blending seamlessly with the tone and aesthetic. The result is a captivating amalgamation that doesn’t feel out of place, as Batman surprisingly fits in perfectly with this style.

Unfortunately, I’m now left to ponder a reality where Go! Bat Phoenix doesn’t exist as a full-fledged series (at least, not yet – perhaps someone will take notice and make it a reality). In the meantime, I can look forward to Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, which will be available digitally starting March 18, offering a modern anime take on the Batfamily to hold me over.
