On Thursday, Nintendo made an announcement regarding the development of Virtual Game Cards, a feature designed to enhance the portability of digitally downloaded games across multiple devices. With the highly anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, this new feature will simplify the process of transferring existing Switch games to new devices for users.

Currently, Switch games can be purchased in either physical or digital form. Physical game cards can be easily transferred between devices by ejecting and reinserting them, whereas digital downloads have proven to be more challenging to port from one device to another.

Slated for release in late April, the Virtual Game Cards are intended to make digital games function similarly to their physical counterparts. By enabling seamless migration of games between two devices, provided they are connected locally during the initial transfer, the feature offers enhanced convenience.

The Virtual Game Cards also include a feature that allows users to lend games to members of their Nintendo Family Group, comprising up to eight individuals, via local Wi-Fi. However, users can only lend one game at a time to a particular person, and the borrowed game will automatically return to the lender after a 14-day period.

Although an official release date for the Switch 2 has not been announced, fans are eagerly awaiting further information about the console, which is expected to be revealed during a Nintendo Direct livestream scheduled for April 2.
