Following a decade-long development process and multiple changes in creative teams, Warner Bros. has finally released its Minecraft movie in theaters. Given the mixed reception of the trailers, there was uncertainty surrounding the film’s performance. However, it has exceeded expectations.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the film, directed by Jared Hess, earned $157 million domestically and $301 million globally in its opening weekend. This domestic performance surpassed analyst predictions and outdid the 2023 Super Mario Bros. movie, which had the previous best start for a video game adaptation with $146.4 million in its first three days. The Minecraft movie now holds the record for the highest-grossing start for a video game movie and has the second-biggest domestic launch since Deadpool & Wolverine’s $211 million last July.

Despite receiving mixed reviews and a viral version of the film with unfinished CG circulating online, the movie has been a hit with families and young players who grew up with the game. The lack of kid-friendly competition, aside from Snow White, which has made $168.4 million globally, has contributed to its success. Audiences seem to prefer watching Jack Black and Jason Momoa over other options.

For the remainder of April, several adult-targeted movies are scheduled for release, including Drop and Warfare (April 11), Sinners (April 18), and Until Dawn and Accountant 2 (April 25). Other family-friendly movies, such as Legend of Ochi (April 18) and King of Kings (April 11), are also set to release, but it remains to be seen if they can compete with the popularity of Minecraft.
