Recently, Meta has been actively integrating various AI features and capabilities into its applications. This includes experimenting with AI-generated characters, complete with distinct profiles and personalities, although these were eventually discontinued due to being deemed creepy and unnecessary.

In a move that may receive mixed reactions from users, Meta is now exploring the use of AI to facilitate interactions between friends by assisting them in writing comments on Instagram.

A user on the platform X, Jonah Manzano, who frequently tests new social media features, discovered a “Write with Meta AI” prompt on Instagram. This feature allows users to receive AI-generated suggestions for comments on posts.

For users with access to this test feature, a pencil icon appears next to the text bar under a post, which they can tap to activate Meta AI, as shown in a video posted by Manzano. Meta AI then analyzes the photo and generates three potential comment suggestions.

As an example, if the photo is of someone smiling with a thumbs up in their living room, Meta AI might suggest comments such as “Cute living room setup,” “Love the cozy atmosphere,” or “Great photo shoot location.” If users are not satisfied with the initial suggestions, they can refresh to receive additional options.

A Meta spokesperson stated, “We regularly test more features for you to use Meta AI across our apps. You will find Meta AI available in areas like comments, feed, groups, and search to make your experiences more fun and useful.”

While Meta did not provide details on the availability of this test feature, the company mentioned that it had previously tested AI-generated comments on Facebook.

This new feature may be met with resistance from users who prefer to keep comments on Instagram free from AI influence, particularly those who value genuine comments from friends. Many users nostalgia for the days when Instagram was more authentic, and the introduction of AI comments could be seen as inauthentic and unnecessary.

As with any test feature, it remains uncertain when or if Meta plans to implement this feature more broadly.
