A significant overhaul is in store for Marvel Rivals, beyond the upcoming additions of Emma Frost and Ultron to the game’s roster. NetEase Games is revamping the game’s post-launch rollout strategy, which includes altering the seasonal schedule and the frequency at which new heroes are introduced.
Following the forthcoming Season 2, future seasons will be condensed to two months in length, with a new playable character being added every month. The game’s initial seasons, which have been successful and influenced this decision, operated on a three-month cycle, similar to other live-service games like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone, with a new hero being introduced every six weeks. According to director Guangyun Chen, this new structure fulfills the “fundamental dream of incorporating even more exciting Marvel heroes into Marvel Rivals.” Chen also hinted at future game modes that would further enable players to “fulfill their fantasies about Marvel superheroes.”
The promise of a new hero every month is ambitious, even considering NetEase’s previous indication that it has a substantial number of characters ready for release. For comparison, Rivals will have a slightly shorter seasonal schedule than Overwatch 2, its most direct competitor, which has nine-week seasons and typically introduces a new hero or map (or both). By the end of 2025, Rivals could potentially have nearly 50 heroes, a prospect that doesn’t concern Marvel. In March, Marvel Games’ Danny Koo told GamesRadar that the developers “just throw everything at [the sky], and fun chaos is the key,” and the growing roster provides players with more options.
There are numerous characters who could join Marvel Rivals, and fans of the comics would love to see every character make an appearance. The success of the monthly rollout and NetEase’s ability to balance the ever-growing roster will be determined in real-time.
