Avengers Delays: What’s Behind the Shift in Release Dates
The Avengers won’t be taking a summer break anytime soon, as both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars have been rescheduled from their initial summer release dates. The new release dates are now set for December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027, respectively, pushing back the start of their respective summer movie seasons by several months.
According to Marvel Studios, the delay is primarily to give the filmmakers more time to work on these massive movies. With directors Joe and Anthony Russo at the helm of both films and Doomsday already in production, it was necessary to adjust the schedule to accommodate the needs of both projects.
Marvel also pointed out that the December release window has proven successful in the past, citing the example of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which became one of the biggest superhero films of all time after its release in December 2021. While the previous two Avengers movies opened in May to even greater success, a holiday opening is still considered a desirable slot. Furthermore, moving these movies to December allows Marvel to create some breathing room in their schedule, giving other films like Spider-Man: Brand New Day (set to release in July 2026) some space to shine.
The delay also gives Disney more time to focus on The Mandalorian & Grogu, the first Star Wars movie in seven years, which is scheduled to release on May 22, 2026, just a few weeks after the original release date of Doomsday. Additionally, the new release dates do not conflict with any upcoming Avatar movies, as the next film in the series is not set to release until 2029.
The future of Marvel is looking more mysterious than ever, with only three official films on the schedule after July’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps: Brand New Day, Doomsday, and Secret Wars. This means fans will have to wait over a year to see a new Marvel movie after this summer. However, Marvel has three dates planned for 2028, although it remains to be seen if these will stick.
With these delays, fans are left to wonder: are you worried about the pushback, or do you think it’s a positive development? What will it be like to experience an Avengers movie during the holiday season?
