The government has issued an advisory to social media platforms to counter the spread of misinformation and deepfakes powered by AI, which have become a significant concern. To protect users in India and the Indian internet from emerging harms related to the misuse of technologies, including AI, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) regularly engages with the industry to promote ethical use of technologies. The IT Rules, 2021, cast specific obligations on intermediaries, including social media intermediaries, to not host, store, or publish any information that violates the law.

Intermediaries are also obligated to ensure accountability, including expeditious action towards removing unlawful information categorized under the IT Rules, 2021, as notified by the appropriate government or based on grievances received against any unlawful information. Users can make a request to the Grievance Officer of the concerned intermediary to remove such information.

Under the IT Rules, 2021, the Government has established Grievance Appellate Committees to allow users and victims to appeal online against decisions taken by Grievance Officers of intermediaries. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) also issues alerts and advisories regarding latest cyber threats and vulnerabilities, including malicious attacks using AI, and countermeasures to protect computers, networks, and data.
