It’s an unusual time to be shopping for graphics cards, GPUs, and other high-performance video processing units, including those from GeForce and Radeon.
AMD has been trying to undercut NVIDIA by offering slightly cheaper, yet less powerful, video cards. However, with the introduction of the Radeon 9070 and 9070 XT, the company may have finally found the right formula, particularly in terms of 4K and ray tracing performance.
According to Devindra Hardawar, the $599 Radeon 9070 XT is a solid mid-range GPU that excels in 1440p gaming and offers decent 4K performance. It also features improved ray tracing capabilities, is faster than the standard Radeon 9070, and includes built-in AI upscaling. Notably, NVIDIA’s similarly priced GPUs were released around the same time.
This strategy is a good one, as it makes more sense for AMD to focus on producing cards that are affordable for consumers rather than competing with NVIDIA at the high end of the market.
It’s also a good time to re-examine the concept of “buying” these GPUs, as the current market is plagued by issues. As Igor Bonifacic noted, nearly every model is currently priced higher than NVIDIA’s suggested retail price. This is no longer a result of the pandemic or cryptocurrency demand, but rather the actions of scalpers and middle-man companies.
