The decentralized social network Bluesky has announced that it now supports videos of up to three minutes in length, as revealed on Monday. This update comes after the platform initially introduced video support in September with a one-minute time limit.
By increasing the video length limit, Bluesky is enhancing its user experience to be more comparable to its competitors, X (formerly Twitter) and Meta’s Threads. While X allows non-paying users to upload videos of up to two minutes and 20 seconds, Threads permits videos of up to five minutes. This change brings Bluesky more in line with these platforms.
This update is also beneficial for the various apps striving to become the “TikTok for Bluesky,” including Bluescreen and Skylight. These apps aim to provide a video experience on Bluesky, either through a video-first Bluesky client or as a new app built on the AT Protocol used by Bluesky. With the extended time limit, they can offer a TikTok alternative that more closely aligns with the popular short-form video app, which allows users to share videos of up to 10 minutes.
Additionally, Bluesky has introduced a new “Chat requests” screen, enabling users to manage messages from unknown users more efficiently. Upon receiving a DM request, users can choose to accept or decline the conversation via this new screen.
Furthermore, Bluesky has implemented a quicker way to mute accounts by adding a “Mute account” option to the three-dot menu on posts. The social network has also enhanced its tablet-size layouts on the web and improved its moderation reporting flow, providing a more streamlined user experience.
