The 35th anniversary of Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film was celebrated last year, and it received a new sequel novel titled Resurrection. However, it appears that the ’89-verse is far from over, as another novel is on the horizon, continuing the story of Michael Keaton’s Caped Crusader.

This upcoming novel, Batman: Revolution, is written by John Jackson Miller, the author of Resurrection. The story takes place during the summer, with the Joker defeated and a Fourth of July festival approaching. Meanwhile, Norman Pinkus, who claims to be the “smartest man in Gotham,” sees this as the perfect opportunity to strike. As a copy boy for the city paper and the creator of the popular Riddle Me word puzzles, Norman has been using his intellect to solve crimes before Batman can. Feeling underappreciated, Norman teams up with mysterious allies to challenge Batman to a game of riddles, determining who is the true hero of Gotham.

Notably, Norman is the Batman ’89 version of the Riddler. In the ’90s, Robin Williams was initially considered to play the Riddler in what would eventually become Batman Forever, but he left the project, and the role went to Jim Carrey. Revolution is expected to draw inspiration from plans for Burton’s would-be threequel, offering a glimpse into what could have been if Burton had continued making the movies, much like the Batman ’89 comics.

In an exclusive statement to ComicBook, Miller hinted that the book would showcase a side of Gotham that is “just as active—and even more violent, with tensions rising with the temperatures.” He also mentioned connections to the comic and its sequel, Batman ’89: Echoes.

Batman: Revolution is set to be released in print, digital, and audio formats on October 28.
