Elon Musk’s $100 Million Donation to Trump Groups Raises Eyebrows
Elon Musk is reportedly planning to donate $100 million to two political groups associated with President Donald Trump, according to a recent report from the New York Times. This move is unprecedented in American politics, primarily because federal "employees" like Musk typically do not contribute millions of dollars to their "boss." Furthermore, it is notable that Trump recently hosted a promotional event for Tesla at the White House on Tuesday.
Musk’s Donation Plans
Musk intends to donate a combined $100 million to the super PAC known as Make America Great Again Inc. and a political nonprofit group called Securing American Greatness, as per the Times report. What makes these donations unusual is that Musk already has his own group, America PAC, which played a significant role in running disinformation campaigns to help Trump win the election in November.
Questions Surrounding the Donations
It is unclear why Musk is not donating to his own PAC instead. However, the Times speculates that it might be part of Musk’s desire to be seen as a "team player." Despite their personal differences, Musk and Trump have a mutual understanding that they need each other to achieve their goals. Musk seeks control of the U.S. government to funnel money into his businesses, while Trump requires Musk’s financial support to maintain influence over politicians.
Influencing Political Decisions
For instance, Musk purchased ads targeting Sen. Joni Ernst in Iowa when it seemed the Republican might not support the confirmation of Fox News host Pete Hegseth as Defense Secretary. After Musk ran the ads, Ernst fell in line, and Hegseth was confirmed, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote in the Senate.
America PAC’s Activities
America PAC has now shifted its focus to influencing the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, with Musk’s group spending over $8 million to support a conservative judge in an upcoming election, according to the Associated Press. Donald Trump Jr. and Charlie Kirk are even hosting a town hall for the conservative judge on Monday.
Historical Precedent and Concerns
The plan by Musk to spend money on groups associated with Trump has no historical precedent in the U.S. political system. As the wealthiest person in the world and an "employee" of the federal government, Musk’s actions appear to be buying even more influence than he already has. Musk has unilaterally stopped payments to programs he dislikes and has dismantled USAID, an action that is blatantly illegal since only Congress has the power to create and destroy agencies through appropriations. The Department of Education is being dismantled this week, and Musk has signaled that Social Security is next on the list.
Challenging Musk’s Actions
Musk’s actions are being challenged in the courts, but there are no guarantees that even if the challenges are successful, much of the damage will be reversible. Once enormous institutions are destroyed, it is not possible to simply restore them by flipping a switch. Leases have been canceled, and tens of thousands of people have been fired. Rebuilding USAID, for example, would require considerable resources to get the agency up and running again.
Timing of Donations and Promotion of Tesla
Many people are suspicious of the timing of Musk’s donations, given that Trump has been promoting Tesla in recent weeks. This included hosting an event at the White House on Tuesday, where Trump expressed his intention to buy a Tesla. News cameras captured Trump reading from a sheet of paper that resembled Tesla sales literature, and he even posted a screenshot of a tweet from Fox News host Sean Hannity, who claimed to have recently purchased a Tesla.
Normalization of Self-Dealing
This kind of salesmanship and self-dealing has become normalized with Trump in office. However, if one steps back, it is truly bizarre to see two billionaires promoting their products outside the White House like it’s a used car lot. This is happening because Tesla’s sales have plummeted, and its stock price has tanked as Musk’s brand has become synonymous with fascism.
Consequences for Vulnerable Americans
The U.S. is becoming an increasingly dangerous environment for vulnerable Americans. The trans community is under attack, children are having food ripped from their mouths, and a green card holder was thrown into ICE detention and faces deportation not for breaking the law but for saying things the government didn’t like.
Lack of Resistance from Democrats
Nobody knows what will happen in the near future, but the Democrats have put up very little resistance to the ongoing fascist takeover of the U.S. In fact, 17 Democrats voted to confirm Trump’s labor secretary, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, this week. These individuals claim they are doing everything they can to fight back against Musk and Trump, yet they vote to install their hand-picked stooges.
The Need for Real Opposition
The protests at Tesla dealerships are making waves, but if the Democrats do not start acting like a real opposition party, there will be no real fix to America’s current predicament. Time is running out.
