Google Chromecast Fix

Google has begun rolling out a software fix for older Chromecast devices that were experiencing issues with casting. This update comes after an email was sent to affected owners, which can be viewed on the Google Nest Community pages. The email provides details on the fix and instructions for resolving the issue.

Resolving Casting Issues

If you haven’t already factory-reset your device, it may be working again. However, if you’re still experiencing problems, Google recommends rebooting your device and trying to cast again. For Chromecasts that were accidentally reset to factory settings, you’ll need to reconnect them using the latest version of the Google Home app, which is available for both iOS (version 3.30.106) and Android (version 3.30.1.6). Note that the app update is still being rolled out, so you may not see it in your app store just yet.

Background on the Issue

The casting issue first arose early last week, affecting some second-generation Chromecasts and Chromecast Audio dongles. Prior to Google’s promise of a fix, there was speculation that this might be the beginning of the end for the Chromecast line, given that Google no longer sells these devices and has retired the name and dongle-style device in favor of the Google TV Streamer, released in August 2024. However, the relatively swift release of this fix suggests that Google intends to continue supporting existing Chromecasts for the time being.
