Sony Ditches PSN Account Requirement for PC Single-Player Games
Sony has announced that its biggest single-player games on PC will no longer require players to link to a PlayStation Network account to play them. This change comes as a welcome relief for PC gamers worldwide, particularly those in regions where the PlayStation Network is not available.
A New Era for PC Gamers
The news was revealed in a press release by Sony, stating that linking a PlayStation Account will now be optional for select PlayStation titles on PC. This move is significant, as it addresses a long-standing issue that has affected many PC gamers. For instance, if you bought the Steam or Epic version of God of War Ragnarok on PC in a country where the PlayStation Network is not available, you would not be able to play it due to the PSN requirement.
A Risky Workaround
Before this change, players had to use mods to bypass the PSN login requirement. This method was risky, as it required messing around with the game’s files, which could be easily screwed up if you didn’t know what you were doing. This workaround became a bigger issue around the release of Helldivers 2 PC version in 2024, leading to a fan backlash against PSN account linking.
A Lesson Learned
The fan backlash against PSN account linking was so intense that fans resorted to review-bombing the game on its Steam page in protest. Sony later reversed course, lifting the need to link a PSN account to their Steam accounts to play the online co-op sci-fi shooter. This experience taught Sony the importance of listening to their customers and making changes to improve their gaming experience.
What’s Changing
Users will no longer need to sign in to a PlayStation Network account to play first-party PlayStation single-player games on their PCs, such as God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. Other games like Ghost of Tsushima still require a PSN account to access online multiplayer.
Exclusive Content
Players who opt-in to sign into these games with an existing or new PlayStation Network account will receive access to exclusive content, such as cosmetics or in-game currency. This change is a significant improvement for PC gamers, and it’s likely to be welcomed by many in the gaming community.
