The Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk and also referred to as DOGE, is reportedly planning to host a hackathon next week. The primary focus of this event will be the development of a comprehensive API, known as a “mega API,” which aims to provide access to taxpayer data, as reported by Wired. This API can be accessed through a dedicated webpage.

According to Wired, the hackathon is being organized by Gavin Kilger and Sam Corcos, two staff members of DOGE who are currently working at the Internal Revenue Service. Notably, Sam Corcos also serves as the CEO of the healthtech startup Levels. It has been reported that Corcos has expressed his ambition to create “one new API to rule them all,” indicating a desire for a unified and streamlined system.

The proposed “mega API” would facilitate easy access to IRS data for cloud providers, including sensitive information such as taxpayer names, addresses, social security numbers, tax returns, and employment details. This data could potentially be exported to external systems. As reported by Wired, a third-party vendor is likely to manage certain aspects of the project, with Palantir being consistently mentioned as a potential candidate for this role.

An anonymous source within the IRS has expressed concerns about the project, stating that “it’s basically an open door controlled by Musk for all Americans’ most sensitive information with none of the rules that normally secure that data,” as quoted by Wired. This highlights the potential risks and vulnerabilities associated with the proposed system.
