The recent release of the first Wicked movie and its upcoming sequel has sparked a new wave of Wizard of Oz enthusiasm. The original 1939 film marked its 85th anniversary last year, just before the release of Wicked, and now it’s taking center stage again thanks to the Las Vegas Sphere.
Starting in August, the venue will offer a “fully immersive experience” for Wizard of Oz on its massive 160,000-square foot screen. Developed in collaboration with Google, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Magnopus, this reimagined version of the film will be “enhanced” with modern technology while preserving the integrity of the original. Although the specifics of the immersive elements have not been disclosed by Sphere, it promises to be an exciting experience.
This film is part of Sphere’s new initiative to create original entertainment content beyond concerts and live events, making it the first classic movie to receive an immersive experience at the Las Vegas destination. According to Sphere Entertainment CEO Jim Dolan, these immersive experiences will provide “a diverse slate that leverages Sphere’s power as an experiential medium.” Both Wizard and its successor experience From the Edge are expected to propel the company’s vision forward “in different ways.”
If this sounds like an exciting experience to you, mark your calendars for the Wizard of Oz premiere at the Sphere on August 28.
