Introduction to Claude 3.7 Sonnet

Another week has passed, and a new AI model is now available for public use. This time, it’s Anthropic that has introduced Claude 3.7 Sonnet. According to the company, this latest release is the market’s first "hybrid reasoning model," which means the new version of Claude can answer a question either instantly or take its time to work through it step by step. Users have the flexibility to decide the approach Claude takes, using a dropdown menu to select the desired "thinking mode".

Key Features of Claude 3.7 Sonnet

The introduction of Claude 3.7 Sonnet is a significant development in the field of AI. As Anthropic notes, "We’ve developed Claude 3.7 Sonnet with a different philosophy from other reasoning models on the market. Just as humans use a single brain for both quick responses and deep reflection, we believe reasoning should be an integrated capability of frontier models rather than a separate model entirely." This unified approach creates a more seamless experience for users.

Comparison with Other Models

Anthropic’s approach is distinct from that of its competitors, particularly OpenAI. While OpenAI offers multiple models, including GPT-4, o1, o1-mini, and o3-mini, Anthropic’s unified approach aims to simplify the user experience. In fact, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has admitted that the numerous models can be overwhelming for users.

Development Approach

Anthropic took a different approach to developing Claude’s reasoning capabilities. The company optimized the model less for math and computer science competition problems and focused more on real-world tasks that reflect how businesses use LLMs. As a result, current Claude users can expect significant improvements in coding and front-end web development.

Availability and Accessibility

Claude 3.7 Sonnet is now available across all Claude plans, including Anthropic’s free tier. Developers can access the new model through the company’s API, Amazon Bedrock, and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI.

Introducing Claude Code

In addition to the new model, Anthropic is introducing Claude Code, a new "agentic" tool that allows users to delegate coding tasks to Claude directly from a terminal interface. Currently available as a limited research preview, Claude Code can read code, edit files, write and run tests, and even push commits to GitHub.
