Madurai: The cyber crime police in Madurai rural district have warned the public to be cautious of scammers who send APK files for traffic challans and banking KYC updates, as well as updates for government schemes and EB bill payments.

According to the police, there have been recent cases of individuals losing money after scammers hacked their accounts, particularly through APK files downloaded from fake mobile apps shared on platforms like WhatsApp.

When these files are installed, cyber criminals use them to hack the victim’s WhatsApp account and subsequently their mobile phone, gaining access to SMS messages and other data, including internet banking accounts. The police stated that hackers can threaten people using the stolen data and withdraw or transfer money from their bank accounts.

The best way to prevent such frauds is to avoid opening or clicking on suspicious links. However, if someone accidentally installs an APK file, the police advise immediately putting their mobile phone on airplane mode to cut off connectivity. The file should then be deleted, and the phone should be subjected to a factory data reset.

In case of any financial loss due to online fraud, the public can call the cyber crime toll-free helpline number 1930 for assistance. Complaints can also be filed with the cyber crime police through the website www.cybercrime.gov.in.
