While Mark Zuckerberg might not be the most well-liked individual in Silicon Valley, it’s understandable that he would find it unusual if someone made a film about his life.

In an appearance on the YouTube podcast Colin and Samir, Zuckerberg discussed his sole viewing experience of “The Social Network.”

“It was a strange feeling,” he admitted. “The filmmakers got numerous minor details correct, such as my attire or specific events, but the overall narrative and my motivations were completely inaccurate.”

The 15-year-old film came up in conversation because Zuckerberg was wearing a T-shirt that Jesse Eisenberg had worn while portraying him in the movie — a shirt that Zuckerberg had later purchased at an auction. Although Zuckerberg was once known for wearing plain grey T-shirts, he has since paid more attention to his style, so it’s likely that his choice of T-shirt was intentional.

Zuckerberg stated that he knew his employees would be curious about the film anyway, so he organized a company viewing.

“The entire storyline is incorrect, suggesting that I was motivated by a desire to find a girlfriend, when in fact I was already dating Priscilla before I started Facebook.”

This portrayal of Zuckerberg may have originated from another notorious website he created as a student: Facemash, an app that allowed students to vote on which of their classmates was the most attractive. While the service was popular among some students, it angered others who felt it was a violation of their privacy, as he had scraped their student ID photos from private servers to create the site.

“It’s regrettable that people often fabricate the founding mythology of the internet to suit their own narratives,” Zuckerberg said.

He denies any connection between Facemash and Facebook, claiming that people still link the two due to “The Social Network,” even after more than two decades.

“I was just a kid at the time,” Zuckerberg said.
