Introduction to the Issue
A few days ago, reports emerged that major Hollywood studios were generating revenue from fake movie trailers created using generative AI. In response to this development, YouTube has taken decisive action, suspending a pair of channels renowned for producing these trailers.
Background on the Channels
According to Deadline, YouTube has revoked the ad revenue for Screen Culture and KH Films, with the former being the more prominent of the two. Nikhil Chaudhari, the founder of Screen Culture, was quoted extensively in Deadline’s report. Some of the channel’s most popular videos include "trailers" for films like Fantastic Four: First Steps and Superman. Meanwhile, KH Studio has produced trailers for hypothetical projects, such as a Squid Game season featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and a James Bond movie starring Henry Cavill and Margot Robbie.
YouTube’s Monetization Policies
YouTube’s decision to halt revenue for these channels stems from claims of policy violations. As outlined by Deadline, creators must make significant modifications when utilizing materials derived from others. Moreover, videos cannot be "duplicative or repetitive" or created solely to garner views. Misinformation also plays a crucial role, as the platform prohibits content that could potentially mislead viewers. For instance, Screen Culture’s Fantastic Four videos have teased characters like Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer and Ralph Ineson’s Galactus, who have not been revealed in Marvel’s official trailer.
Response from Creators
The founder of KH Studio expressed his perspective to Deadline, stating that his videos are intended to provide entertaining ‘what if’ scenarios and emphasizing that it is "tough to see it grouped under ‘misleading content’ in the demonetization decision." He reiterated that his goal is to explore creative possibilities, not to misrepresent actual releases. Similarly, during the initial reporting, Chaudhari took a comparable stance, suggesting that most YouTube users recognize his videos as fake and, therefore, no harm is done. However, he has not responded to Deadline’s queries at the time of writing.
