Introduction to the Xiaomi 15 Ultra
Practically every high-end smartphone available in the market can capture an exceptional picture. However, this has not deterred Xiaomi from continuing its collaboration with the renowned camera manufacturer, Leica, to produce a photography powerhouse in the form of the new Xiaomi 15 Ultra.
Specifications and Features
The phone is powered by a high-performance Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, making its specs truly top-notch. Additionally, it boasts a large 6,000 mAh battery, which surpasses the battery capacity of flagships from Apple, Google, or Samsung. The charging capabilities are also impressive, with wired speeds reaching up to 90 watts and wireless charging at 80 watts. Unlike many phones sold in the US, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra includes a power adapter in the box.
Display and Design
The device features a stunning 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a variable refresh rate of 1-120Hz and a peak brightness of up to 3,200 nits. The phone is available in three distinct color options: a white model with an etched back, a black version with a textured finish, and a special Silver Chrome edition inspired by Leica’s classic cameras. The white model, which was tested, has subtle curves on its back that catch the light, but the two-toned metal and black variant is arguably the most attractive, as it emphasizing the phone’s photography capabilities.
Camera Capabilities
The rear of the phone houses a sizable circular camera module, which typically may not be aesthetically pleasing on other devices, such as the OnePlus 13. However, on the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, it encloses significant photo hardware. The primary camera utilizes a large 1-inch 50-megapixel Sony sensor, equivalent to 23mm. For capturing expansive landscapes, there’s an f/2.2 50MP ultrawide camera. Furthermore, the phone features not one but two zoom lenses: a 50MP mid-range shooter with a 70mm focal length and a high-resolution 200MP periscope array with a 100mm focal length, offering a 4.7x optical zoom.
Initial Impressions and Software
Although extensive testing is still underway, preliminary results indicate that the Xiaomi 15 Ultra possesses one of the most well-rounded camera setups available. It combines Leica optics with substantial sensors and lenses covering virtually every focal length needed for daily use. The software includes preset Leica filters like Vibrant or Authentic, highlighting the collaboration between the two brands.
Additional Features and Availability
One of the most impressive aspects is the optional photography kit, which includes an add-on camera grip with a physical shutter button, an adjustable dial, and a dedicated video button. There’s also a case that allows attaching a standard 67mm filter adapter, enabling the use of glass from real cameras with the Ultra 15. The kit comes with extras like a hand strap, a decorative lens ring, and two removable caps for the shutter. Unfortunately, despite being available globally starting at around €850, there are no official plans to release the Xiaomi 15 Ultra in the US, which is unfortunate since no similar handsets are currently sold in America.
