Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has introduced image generation capabilities to its Application Programming Interface (API).
Currently, the API features a single model, known as “grok-2-image-1212.” This model is capable of generating up to 10 images per request, with a limit of 5 requests per second, in JPG format, and is priced at $0.07 per image.
For context, AI startup Black Forest Labs, which partnered with xAI last year to launch image generation on Musk’s social network X, charges approximately $0.05 per image. In comparison, another prominent image model provider, Ideogram, charges around $0.08 on the higher end.
According to xAI’s documentation, the API currently lacks the ability to adjust image quality, size, or style. Additionally, prompts in requests may be subject to revision by a “chat model.”
xAI, which launched its API in October 2024, appears to be seeking substantial revenue sources as it accelerates the training and development of its flagship models, including Grok 3. The company is reportedly in discussions with investors regarding a potential $10 billion funding round, which could increase its valuation to $75 billion.
Hinting at its broader ambitions, xAI recently acquired a generative AI video startup and is in the process of expanding its Memphis-based data center, which is used to train and run its various models.
