On Tuesday, WordPress revealed the establishment of a dedicated AI team, tasked with overseeing the development of AI-based products within its developer community.
The newly formed team comprises key individuals, including James LePage, who leads AI efforts at Automattic (WordPress’ parent company), as well as Felix Arntz and Pascal Birchler from Google, and Jeff Paul, Director of Open Source at the web design firm 10up.
Given its position as a leading platform for website development, WordPress has already witnessed its open-source community experimenting with various AI-powered tools. The creation of a formal AI team indicates WordPress’ intention to play a more active role in guiding and coordinating AI-related initiatives among its developers.
According to WordPress executive director Mary Hubbard, who wrote in a blog post, “A unified team ensures that AI development is approached thoughtfully, prevents fragmentation, and remains aligned with WordPress’ long-term objectives.”
At present, WordPress developers have created and published approximately 660 distinct AI-related plug-ins, with popular examples including AI-driven template builders, AI-powered SEO optimization tools, and chatbots.
