On Friday, WhatsApp introduced a new feature that enables users to add short music clips to their Status updates, evoking memories of the Myspace era.

The Status feature, similar to Instagram Stories, allows users to post photos, videos, and text that automatically disappear after 24 hours. When creating a new Status, users can select a music note icon to browse through millions of available songs. The duration of music clips can be up to 15 seconds for photos and up to 60 seconds for videos.

This launch of music clips comes after Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, introduced similar features to Instagram, enabling users to add songs to their profiles, Notes, and posts.

Although WhatsApp’s feature shares similarities with Instagram’s, there is a notable difference: music shared on WhatsApp Status is end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that only the user’s friends can view the songs. WhatsApp itself does not have the ability to access the songs shared by its users.

The rollout of this new feature has begun globally and will continue to expand to more users over the coming weeks.
