### WhatsApp’s Latest Feature: Enhanced User Privacy

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called Advanced Chat Privacy, designed to provide users with an additional layer of privacy. This feature allows users to block other participants from sharing the contents of a conversation in both traditional chats and groups.

According to WhatsApp, “this new setting available in both chats and groups helps prevent others from taking content outside of WhatsApp for when you may want extra privacy,” as stated in their official announcement.

The optional feature, when enabled, prevents others from exporting chats, auto-downloading media to their phone, and using messages for artificial intelligence (AI) features. However, users can still take individual screenshots or manually download the media.

### Enhanced Protection for Sensitive Conversations

This feature is particularly useful when engaging in sensitive conversations with groups where users may not know everyone closely. WhatsApp recommends using this feature in such scenarios to maintain privacy.

The feature is currently rolling out to all users who are on the latest version of WhatsApp.

### Meta Faces €200 Million Fine for Breaching Digital Markets Act

The introduction of this feature comes as Meta faces a €200 million fine from the European Commission for breaching the Digital Markets Act (DMA) by illegally requiring users to opt for a “pay or consent” model. This model did not offer a less personalized but equivalent alternative for those who do not consent.

According to the Commission, “this model is not compliant with the DMA, as it did not give users the required specific choice to opt for a service that uses less of their personal data but is otherwise equivalent to the ‘personalised ads’ service.” The Commission also stated that Meta’s model did not allow users to exercise their right to freely consent to the combination of their personal data.

### Ongoing Assessment of Meta’s New Model

The fine is specifically for the period between March 2024, when the DMA took effect, and November 2024. Meta could face additional penalties if its new system is also found to be non-compliant.

Meta has responded to the fine, stating that the Commission is “attempting to handicap successful American businesses while allowing Chinese and European companies to operate under different standards.” Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Joel Kaplan, noted that the European Commission’s decision is also hurting European businesses and economies by unfairly restricting personalized advertising.
