Following the integration of Google Assistant with Waze on iOS devices in 2020, iPhone users have been experiencing persistent issues that the company has been unable to resolve for over a year, according to a post by Waze, in which they apologized for the “prolonged inconvenience” caused to users.
As of Wednesday, the navigation app has officially discontinued the feature for iOS users.
Numerous users had reported on Reddit that when they attempt to use the voice reporting feature by clicking the microphone button and speaking, there is no response, despite the Assistant seeming to detect their voice, as seen in multiple threads.
In place of the discontinued feature, Waze plans to introduce an “enhanced voice interaction solution” in the near future, as announced on the official forum. The company has also been testing a new AI-powered “Conversational Reporting” feature since October 2024, which allows select users to report incidents using voice commands, as part of the new road reporting features being rolled out.
The timing of this change is notable, given that Google announced earlier this month that it is transitioning users from Google Assistant to Gemini, with plans to phase out Assistant on most mobile devices and in mobile app stores later this year, as reported.
For the time being, users of Android devices will still be able to utilize Google Assistant with Waze.
