Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has announced that Waymo is currently logging over 200,000 paid robotaxi rides on a weekly basis. This update was shared by Pichai on X, highlighting the significant progress of the tech giant’s subsidiary.
Waymo is commercially operating its robotaxis in several major cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix.
Reaching 200,000 weekly trips is a notable milestone for the company, especially considering it was only providing around 10,000 rides a week two years ago. As Pichai pointed out, this represents a 20-fold increase in the number of weekly paid rides over the past two years. Furthermore, in August, the company was already providing 100,000 weekly paid robotaxi rides, indicating a continued upward trend.
According to Waymo, its self-driving system covers more than 1 million miles each week. This number is expected to grow further in the future, particularly with the launch of commercial robotaxi services in Austin and Atlanta in 2025, in collaboration with Uber. Additionally, Waymo plans to introduce a commercial robotaxi service in Miami in early 2026.
The company’s current operations and future expansion plans position it significantly ahead of other autonomous vehicle (AV) competitors in terms of its commercial robotaxi footprint. With Cruise having ended its robotaxi program, Zoox remains as a primary rival. Although Zoox has begun rolling out its custom-built robotaxis in San Francisco and Las Vegas, it has yet to commence commercial operations.
