Dune: Part Two was a masterpiece in its own right, but its IMAX presentation was truly awe-inspiring. When director Denis Villeneuve utilized the full 1:43:1 aspect ratio for scenes like Paul riding the sandworm, it felt like being transported directly to the planet Arrakis. Given this, it’s not surprising that Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Messiah is set to become the second Hollywood feature film to be shot entirely with full-screen IMAX 70mm-capable film cameras, following in the footsteps of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which achieved this historic feat first.

IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond shared the news during a CNBC segment discussing upcoming IMAX movies. The relevant clip can be viewed below.

An IMAX spokesperson confirmed that Villeneuve will indeed film Dune Messiah using IMAX cameras, although it’s unclear if the entire movie will be captured in this format, as suggested by Gelfond’s comments. Warner Bros. has not provided a statement on the matter, but we will update this story with any new information that becomes available.

There have been numerous rumors surrounding Dune Messiah over the past few months, with the latest indicating that Villeneuve will begin filming soon. However, if this IMAX news is accurate, production may need to wait until Christopher Nolan completes filming The Odyssey, as there are only a limited number of cameras capable of capturing movies in this format, and Nolan currently has access to all of them.

Last weekend, several actors expected to appear in the third Dune film, including Anya Taylor-Joy and Rebecca Ferguson, were spotted together at a UK-based F1 race. Although unconfirmed, it’s speculated that they may be preparing for the upcoming movie. Despite the lack of an official announcement from Warner Bros., the recent casting of the Atreides kids and this IMAX news contribute to the growing evidence that Dune Messiah is in the works and will be a significant production.
