Aarush and software engineer Mukund Sridhar conceived an idea to develop an AI system that would conduct research on behalf of users and generate a report of options. According to Aarush, “After several weeks of prototyping with his team, Mukund invited me to a meeting and exclaimed, ‘We’ve successfully achieved it.'” Mukund tested the AI by asking it to find and compare soccer and art summer camps for kids in the New York area. “And it delivered,” Mukund noted. “It uncovered details for over 20 camps, leading us to believe we had created something remarkable.”
This remarkable innovation was dubbed Deep Research. As more individuals can now utilize the tool, we requested Aarush to provide tips on how to maximize its potential.
1. Determine if Deep Research is necessary for your task
Aarush suggests that Deep Research is particularly beneficial for tasks requiring extensive browsing and multiple tabs. Mukund concurs, “It’s designed to guide you from having minimal knowledge to gaining a profound understanding of a subject.” If your query demands a swift and immediate response, you likely don’t require Deep Research. For instance, if you want a brief overview of “fintech,” you can use Gemini’s default chat feature. However, if you’re a venture capitalist meeting with a startup in the fintech sector and need to stay updated on the latest industry trends, Deep Research can be invaluable.
2. Initiate with straightforward questions
Aarush emphasizes that the term “Deep” Research doesn’t imply that you need to invest excessive time in crafting your initial prompt. “Don’t overcomplicate it,” he advises. “You can refine your question later, and before Deep Research commences, it will display its research plan, allowing you to modify it as needed.” You can simply select the “Edit plan” option to instruct Deep Research to add to the plan or alter its direction using natural language instructions. Aarush notes that you don’t need to be an expert in writing prompts. “You can merely express your desired outcome, such as ‘I’m looking for an excellent summer camp in New York for my 10-year-old,’ and Deep Research can take it from there.”
