The Scrutiny Continues: USAID Staffers Alarmed by Google’s AI Assistant Gemini

As if the employees of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) weren’t already under intense scrutiny from Elon Musk and his team of provocative critics, another set of unwanted eyes seems to be on the department. According to a report from IT Brew, USAID staffers were informed by leadership that Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, was likely recording conversations happening over Google Workspace applications.

USAID’s Use of Google Workspace

USAID, like many businesses and government agencies, relies on Google Workspace, a suite of cloud-based apps that includes Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and other tools. In January, Google announced an update to Workspace that would expand access to Gemini, the company’s flagship AI tool. Gemini can aid in tasks such as drafting emails, assisting with coding projects, and answering questions. Notably, Gemini can also take notes during meetings held over Google Meet, effectively listening in on the conversation. Moreover, Gemini is enabled by default, requiring users to actively opt out of its functionality.

The Concern over Gemini’s Recording Capability

In the USAID offices, the introduction of Gemini has led to a sense of unease among staffers. They were recently informed that Gemini was active in their Workspace and could potentially be recording conversations, including meetings and human resource reports. The report states that staff meetings became increasingly formal and scripted after the agency became aware of the AI’s presence, with few employees willing to discuss topics candidly. This paranoia stems from the fear that the AI may be recording sensitive discussions, particularly given the current political climate.

The Trump Administration Connection

USAID staff members are concerned that the addition of Gemini coincides with the Trump administration taking office and its scrutiny of the agency. A Google representative has refuted these concerns, stating that USAID had a contract with Google prior to Trump’s inauguration and was not introduced to spy on workers. However, this reassurance may not be comforting for staffers, who are already dealing with various forms of criticism and pressure.

Additional Pressures on USAID Staff

USAID staff are facing multiple challenges, including Elon Musk’s vocal criticism and accusations of corruption, spread of misinformation on Twitter, and the threat of staff reduction from 10,000 to 300. These additional pressures have already taken a toll on the agency, and the presence of Gemini has raised further concerns about who might be listening in on their conversations.
