Authorities in Texas have arrested a UPS driver accused of stealing a substantial quantity of luxury items and technology products from packages intended for delivery to local residents.
A statement released by the office of Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz reveals that 37-year-old Armando Garcia was taken into custody after law enforcement discovered over $200,000 worth of stolen packages at his residence. Garcia had been employed by UPS for five years, a period that seems sufficient to accumulate such a large haul of stolen goods. The press release from the district attorney’s office provides further details on the case.
The stolen items, described as “luxury goods and high-end electronics,” include designer handbags, wallets, and accessories from brands such as Louis Vuitton, Dior, Ferragamo, and Fendi, as well as jewelry, designer clothing, iPhones, iPads, smartwatches, power tools, and electronic accessories, according to the district attorney’s office.
The investigation was initiated after UPS Security, the company’s internal security unit, notified local authorities about missing high-value parcels. Law enforcement then successfully tracked the stolen devices to Garcia’s residence in San Benito, Texas, and obtained a search warrant with the assistance of HSI agents, as stated in the press release.
Garcia was present at his residence during the police search and was taken into custody without incident. He faces various theft charges as a result of the investigation.
According to DA Saenz, “This was a deliberate and systematic effort to steal high-value merchandise intended for paying customers. Crimes of this nature not only harm businesses but also erode consumer confidence. Our Special Investigations Unit is committed to collaborating with law enforcement partners to ensure that individuals who engage in financial crimes are held accountable. Cameron County will not tolerate theft at any level.”
A UPS spokesperson, when contacted by Gizmodo, stated, “At UPS, we have a zero-tolerance policy for theft and take immediate action when it occurs. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation and refer any additional questions to them.”
The district attorney’s office has indicated that “additional suspects and charges” are expected as the investigation continues, suggesting that further arrests may be announced in the near future. Those who are still waiting for the delivery of their designer bags should stay informed about developments in the case.
