Trump’s Quest for Greenland
The President’s fixation on acquiring Greenland persists, despite the territory’s inhabitants and Denmark’s disinterest. The White House is exploring innovative strategies to persuade Greenlanders, including a universal basic income-like scheme, where they would receive an annual stipend from the US taxpayer.

A Creative Approach
The New York Times reported that the Trump administration is considering financial incentives for Greenlanders, such as replacing Denmark’s $600 million subsidies with an annual payment of approximately $10,000 per person. This plan resembles a universal basic income (UBI) scheme, which has been advocated for by proponents to alleviate economic stress for millions of Americans. However, in this case, it would be funded by American taxpayers for the benefit of people living thousands of miles away.

A New Purpose for Greenland
Recent news suggests that the acquisition may not be solely about extracting valuable mineral deposits. Reuters reported that Ken Howery, a former PayPal executive and Trump’s pick for Danish ambassador, is involved in plans to use Greenland as a testbed for "freedom cities" – communities with minimal government oversight and regulation, prioritizing corporate profits and "freedom." These plans are allegedly backed by billionaires Peter Thiel and Elon Musk, who have expressed interest in such communities.

A Libertarian Utopia
Greenland’s small population of 57,000 people and vast geography make it an attractive location for libertarian billionaires to trial their utopian fantasies. The vision for Greenland includes a hub for artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, space launches, micro nuclear reactors, and high-speed rail, with the goal of spurring innovation through sweeping regulatory exemptions. Howery is taking these discussions "seriously," and his involvement has been previously unreported.

The Network State Movement
The pursuit of the "freedom city" dream is fueled by the Network State movement, which aims to build privately owned, cryptocurrency-powered cities untouchable by traditional democratic government structures. This movement has received significant funding from Thiel, who also supported Trump’s first presidential run in 2016. Thiel’s spokesperson has denied his involvement in "freedom city" plans, stating that he is not involved in any discussions regarding Greenland.
