TikTok Ban: Trump’s Stance
US President Donald Trump has expressed willingness to further delay a ban on TikTok, having already postponed it twice.
According to a report by Axios, in a recent interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Trump indicated that if a deal to sell TikTok’s US operations to American owners is not finalized before the current June 19 deadline, he would consider granting the company another extension.
Trump revealed his affinity for the platform, stating, “Perhaps I shouldn’t say this, but I have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok.”
The backstory to this development began when Congress passed a law last year, requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the short-form video app to avoid a ban. TikTok temporarily went offline in the US in January after the ban took effect. However, Trump intervened, declaring a 90-day delay of the ban and proposed exploring a joint venture with US ownership.
When the subsequent deadline approached in April, Trump granted TikTok an additional 75-day extension, citing the Chinese government’s dissatisfaction with the US’s Reciprocal Tariffs, which must approve any deal.
