Multiplayer: Yes | Year released: 2019

I was initially hesitant about Astral Chain from the moment the first trailer was released, up until I had spent a significant amount of time playing it. My initial impression was that it felt somewhat unoriginal, like a by-the-book action game. However, my concerns were soon alleviated, as it turned out to be one of the more innovative titles from PlatinumGames, the renowned developer behind the Bayonetta series, in recent years.

The game is set in a futuristic world where humanity is under constant threat from creatures that exist in a parallel dimension. You assume the role of an officer in an elite task force dedicated to combating this menace. The game’s unique twist is the ability to tame these creatures, known as Legions, which can be utilized in combat. Gameplay involves simultaneously controlling your character and Legion to take down hordes of enemies and more formidable foes. Additionally, your Legion(s) will aid in solving crimes and navigating the environment.

Astral Chain adheres to a familiar loop of investigative work, platforming puzzles, and combat, with the game divided into cases that serve as chapters. Although the story starts off promisingly, it eventually succumbs to a mix of common anime tropes, including plot twists and character arcs reminiscent of famous shows and films. Nevertheless, the engaging gameplay is sufficient to maintain your interest throughout the 20-hour main campaign and the substantial end-game content.

While Astral Chain may not reach the same heights as Nier: Automata, its combat and environments often surpass those of the latter, which is arguably my favorite game of this generation. Given its current price point of under $50, it is definitely worth playing.
