Marvel is gradually making progress in bringing the X-Men back to the big screen over the next few years. As fans eagerly await details on what this will entail and who will be involved (with rumors of potential directors), filmmaker Tim Miller reflected on a project he almost brought to life in the past.
In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Miller, the director of Deadpool, discussed Marvel’s mutant universe, referring to it as the company’s “secret weapon.” He expressed his admiration for the X-Men, stating, “The X-Men are my favorite characters, and I wrote to Kevin Feige, saying, ‘If there was anything you’d ever let me do in the Marvel universe, the X-Men would be it.'” Miller had, in fact, been developing an X-Men film based on Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s Uncanny X-Men #143. The story follows the team as they leave the mansion for the holidays, leaving Kitty Pryde behind to face an invasion by an N’Garai, a demon the team had previously encountered.
Miller described the film as “Home Alone meets Alien,” which sounds like the Kitty Pryde solo movie that Fox announced in 2018, with Miller set to direct from a script by comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis. Unfortunately, the project was in development during the Fox-Disney merger and was ultimately scrapped, along with other proposed solo films for Gambit and Multiple Man, as well as a potential Fantastic Four crossover.
While X-Men movies are typically action-oriented, Fox did explore the horror genre with New Mutants. As the franchise settles into the MCU, it’s possible that the X-Men could be taken in a darker direction again. Miller seems content with how things have turned out, calling himself “the luckiest nerd on the planet” for bringing Deadpool to the big screen. He also expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he’s had, saying, “I didn’t expect to have my own studio, or to work on Terminator: Dark Fate. Being able to create Love Death + Robots is probably my greatest achievement. I’m old, but I’m not done yet.”
