As is the case with every Marvel movie, Thunderbolts features two endings: one before the end credits roll and another after the credits have been displayed. Both of these conclusions are significant, as they pave the way for the team’s future endeavors and their upcoming appearance in Avengers: Doomsday. Director Jake Schreier has shared his insights into the creation of the post-credits scene.

The post-credits scene takes place 14 months after the team was introduced to the public as the New Avengers. The team is dealing with a lawsuit from Sam Wilson over the Avengers trademark, but this issue takes a backseat when they discover a rocket heading towards Earth, bearing the logo of the Fantastic Four. According to Schreier, this scene was filmed approximately a month prior to the movie’s mid-April premiere, with Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo at the helm in London. Notably, the Thunderbolts team was already confirmed to be part of the Doomsday cast in March, and this post-credits scene marks the Russo brothers’ first scene shot since their departure from the MCU with Avengers: Endgame.

Schreier, although not directly involved in directing the post-credits scene, was involved in reviewing the script and collaborating to ensure that the scene remained true to the characters and their development. He found it “very fun to watch your buddies go on to this grander scale…and see them directed in another context and on a different level of scope than we had been treating it.”

Now that the Thunderbolts are under the direction of the Russos, fans will have to wait until the release of Avengers: Doomsday on May 1 to see how the New Avengers interact with the Fantastic Four, Sam’s Avengers, and the X-Men.
