The video game The Last of Us Part II is renowned for its unforgettable moments, featuring life-or-death decisions and significant revelations. However, one particular moment stands out in our minds – a poignant scene set in a deserted, decrepit museum. This moment, which we previously discussed when the game was released, is where Joel (played by Pedro Pascal in the show) takes Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey in the show) for a special gift. This scene is briefly glimpsed in the latest trailer for The Last of Us season two, which premieres on April 13.
Although fans of the show may not have immediately recognized the scene, gamers familiar with the series knew exactly what they were seeing – the show’s recreation of that scene. According to Last of Us co-creator and executive producer Craig Mazin, this nod was intentionally included. At a recent press conference attended by io9, Mazin stated, “In the trailer, you see Pedro and Bella standing by the space capsule in the museum. This scene was the first thing Neil [Druckmann, co-creator] showed me from The Last of Us Part 2. It’s beautiful, and watching [Pascal and Ramsey] bring it to life and make it their own was truly spectacular.”
Mazin’s explanation came in response to a question about whether there were any moments from the game that the team was excited to adapt for the show. While the museum scene was specifically mentioned, Mazin also alluded to another significant moment. “I don’t want to give it away, but there’s a scene in the final episode of the season… it’s quite impactful in the game, and as we brought it to film, it evolved in a way that left me amazed,” he said.
Without revealing too much, it’s clear that this scene is a major spoiler. Similarly, discussing the museum scene in detail, knowing that audiences will soon experience it on the show, would also be a significant spoiler. Instead, you can read about it here or watch it on YouTube, and soon, when The Last of Us season two returns to HBO on April 13.
