The wait is finally over for the highly anticipated return of HBO’s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic thriller, The Last of Us. After a lengthy wait of a couple of years, the network has confirmed that the show will premiere its second season on April 13. The news is akin to waiting for the next installment in a beloved video game series, and fans can now mark their calendars for the upcoming release.
A recent press release from HBO has revealed that the seven-episode sophomore season will debut on Sunday, April 13, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, with simultaneous streaming on Max. To coincide with the announcement, three new posters have been released, featuring Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, and newcomer Kaitlyn Dever as Joel, Ellie, and Abby, respectively.
The Last of Us Season 2 Release Date Posters
The second season will pick up five years after the events of the first season, which concluded with Joel’s controversial decision to rescue Ellie from a Firefly facility. The new season will adapt the events of Naughty Dog’s 2020 video game sequel, The Last of Us Part II, and will follow Joel and Ellie as they navigate the challenges of their relationship and the post-apocalyptic world.
Besides the reduced episode count, the only other confirmed detail about season two is that it will only cover part of the events of Part II, rather than adapting the entire game. Initially, The Last of Us was planned to run for three seasons, but by splitting the story across multiple seasons, the possibility of additional seasons remains open. The Last of Us initially intended to have a three-season run, but the decision to split the adaptation of Part II into multiple seasons has left room for potential future seasons.
In an interview with Deadline last summer, showrunner Craig Mazin stated, “We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [two and three] because we’re taking our time and going down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in season one too. We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that—as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television—season three will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require season four.”
The question on everyone’s mind is where season two will pause the story. Fans of the game have been speculating about this for almost as long as they’ve been waiting for the new season. Fortunately, the wait is almost over, and we’ll soon have our answers.
