Although Netflix has not announced an official release date for the final season of Stranger Things, the platform is offering fans a chance to experience the world of Hawkins through the upcoming play, First Shadow. This prequel play has just begun its preview run and is set to officially open in April, generating excitement among fans. To build anticipation, Netflix has shared two new screenshots from the Broadway production, showcasing Louis McCartney as Henry Creel, also known as One or Vecna, as he utilizes his powers and interacts with the Mind Flayer.

In addition to the play, Netflix has announced an upcoming documentary that delves into the production of First Shadow prior to its West End premiere in December 2023. The documentary has received endorsement from Stranger Things creators Ross and Matt Duffer. The West End production of First Shadow received critical acclaim and won two Olivier Awards for set design and comedy or play entertainment. Louis McCartney also received a Stage Debut Award for Best Performer in 2024.

First Shadow tells the story of 15-year-old Henry Creel, who has just moved to Hawkins with his family in search of a fresh start. Initially, Henry is able to form friendships, participate in the school play, and cross paths with younger versions of future Stranger Things characters, including Hopper and Joyce. However, things become more complex when a series of bizarre crimes occurs in the town, potentially linked to Henry’s powers. The Broadway cast of First Shadow includes Alison Jaye, Burke Swanson, and T.R. Knight, alongside Louis McCartney.

In a Tudum blog post, director Stephen Daldry discussed the challenges of creating a visually stunning experience for the audience, stating, “You have to deliver that. The fusion of television and theater is about the speed of narrative and how you create it … There are moments in First Shadow where you will think: I don’t understand how they did that.”

The documentary Behind the Curtain is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on April 15, a week before the play’s official opening at the Mariott Marquis Theater on April 22. Tickets for the play can be purchased here.
