Throughout the entirety of Star Wars Celebration Japan, the connection between the galaxy far, far away and its roots in Japanese media was omnipresent. However, one of the most delightful celebrations of this connection was discreetly situated amidst the chaos of the show floor.
Located at the rear of a dedicated anime and manga pavilion on the Celebration show floor, which primarily showcased concept art and props from the first two volumes of Star Wars Visions, an entire wall of art invited attendees to explore a unique mashup gallery that brought together the worlds of Studio Ghibli and Star Wars.
Curated by a multitude of talented individuals from various Lucasfilm divisions, with none other than noted Ghibli enthusiast Dave Filoni at the helm, the gallery featured an array of art that merged characters and concepts from Star Wars with iconic Ghibli films and imagery, including Porco Rosso and Princess Mononoke, as well as touching on Lucasfilm’s official collaboration with the studio, Zen: Grogu and Dust Bunnies.
“The influence of Japan on my creativity has been a constant,” Filoni expressed in a message accompanying his art piece, “Ahsokanoke”, which depicted Ahsoka and Grogu in a Ghibli-esque style. “I have always been enamored with Tokusatsu and was enthralled by anime series like Macross,”
“After witnessing Miyazaki’s film Princess Mononoke, my perspective on animation was forever altered. Every aspect of that film resonated with me, leaving a lasting impression. When I created Ahsoka Tano, I intentionally infused her with a hint of San’s essence. This is the reason Ahsoka has two ‘wolf fangs’ on her cheeks, serving as a homage to Miyazaki’s film.”
