Previously, a collection of Marvel-themed cards was introduced to Magic: The Gathering—a game that frequently incorporates various brand crossovers, including previous collaborations. Notable heroes such as Black Panther, Wolverine, and Captain America were featured in this collection. However, Spider-Man was not included in the initial lineup because he will have his own dedicated set.
This past weekend, at the New York Toy Fair, Wizards of the Coast revealed six cards from the upcoming Spider-Man crossover set. Alongside Peter Parker, the preview showcases three classic villains: Venom, Green Goblin, and Doctor Octopus. Additionally, specific cards are centered around Goblin’s pumpkin bombs and Ock’s tentacles. As “Legendary Creatures,” Spider-Man and his villains have distinct abilities, such as removing up to three stun counters (Peter) or exiling a target creature card from a graveyard (Venom). Furthermore, Ock’s tentacles allow players to take control of an artifact card from an enemy’s graveyard. This is just the beginning, as other cards will feature additional villains and fellow Spider-heroes, including Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and potentially Miguel O’Hara, who is featured on the cover of a welcome pack.
According to Wizards’ executive producer Max McCall, in an interview with IGN, the decision to dedicate a set to Spider-Man was made to “do justice to the character” and incorporate the numerous villains he has encountered over the years. By doing so, the team avoided having to leave many characters out of a larger, more general set. While it might have been possible to include characters like Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales in a non-Spider-Man specific set, there wouldn’t have been enough room for other important characters like Aunt May.
For those excited about the prospect of a full Spider-Man set, Wizards offers a range of bundles available for purchase. Prices vary, starting at $38 for a Collector Booster box, $42 for a Scene Box, or $210 for a 30-pack Play Booster box. Pre-orders can be placed on Amazon or at local game stores, ahead of the official release on September 26.
