Snap has introduced a standalone Lens Studio app for iOS and a web-based tool, as announced by the company on Wednesday. These new tools aim to simplify the creation of AR Lenses using text prompts and intuitive editing features.

The Lens Studio app enables users to generate AI effects, incorporate their Bitmoji, and explore trending templates to create customized Lenses.

Previously, Lens Studio was only accessible through a desktop application designed for professional developers. Although the desktop application will remain the primary tool for professionals, Snap has developed the new iOS app and web tool to allow individuals of all skill levels to create Lenses.

According to Snap’s blog post, “These experimental new tools make it easier than ever to create, publish, and play with Snapchat Lenses made by you. Now, you can generate your own AI effects, add your dancing Bitmoji to the fun, and express yourself with Lenses that reflect your mood or an inside joke — whether you’re on the go or near your computer.”

Currently, Snap has an ecosystem of over 400,000 professional AR developers. With the launch of these simplified tools, the company aims to attract more individuals interested in creating Lenses.

As a leader in AR, Snap has been at the forefront of the technology through its AR filters and Lenses. The company’s commitment to investing in the space is evident, even as others may be retracting from it. Last year, Meta’s decision to shut down its Spark AR platform angered creators, who had used the platform to build augmented reality effects. By making AR creation more accessible, Snap is reinforcing its vision for the technology.

In addition to expanding AR creation to a broader audience, Snap is also releasing advanced tools for professionals. Yesterday, the company introduced new Lens Studio tools that enable AR creators and developers to build Bitmoji games. These tools include a turn-based system for back-and-forth gameplay, a customizable Character Controller that supports different gameplay styles, and more.
