Following its announcement to discontinue third-party fact-checking in January 2025, Meta’s replacement, which relies on crowdsourcing, is now taking form. A waitlist is currently available for those who wish to become a Community Notes contributor on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, with the feature expected to launch in the coming months.

Contributors will be tasked with adding context to posts on Meta’s platforms that “may be inaccurate or confusing” via a note, as stated on the company’s sign-up page. Community Notes can be added to “most public content” across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, and must be 500 characters or fewer in length. All notes will be subject to Meta’s Community Standards and the evaluation of other contributors. Meta encourages contributors to rate notes to ensure the most accurate context is displayed under posts.

To be eligible to sign up, individuals must be based in the US, be at least 18 years old, have a Meta account that is more than six months old and in good standing, and have either a verified phone number or two-factor authentication. Meta will begin selecting contributors from the waitlist once the Community Notes beta launches, although a specific launch date has not been announced. The company does mention that Community Notes will be introduced “over the next few months” in a phased manner.

Meta began testing Community Notes on Threads about a month ago. The feature, named and functionally similar to X’s Community Notes, which originally launched in 2022 when the company was still known as Twitter. Crowdsourced pseudo-fact checks, including Community Notes, have been tested on various Google platforms such as YouTube and Search, sharing a common limitation – the lack of guarantee of accuracy inherent in crowdsourced information compared to that provided by a dedicated, impartial fact-checker.
