Severance Season 3: What’s Next?
There has been a lot of buzz surrounding Severance lately, and for good reason. The season 2 finale has just aired, marking the end of a chapter that was nearly three years in the making. Furthermore, a third season has been officially announced, and we had the opportunity to sit down with the show’s creator, Dan Erickson. With so much Lumon to discuss, it’s best to dive in and explore all the latest developments before the long wait for the next season begins.
However, the question on everyone’s mind is: what can we expect from season 3? In an interview with Rolling Stone, Erickson shared some insights into the potential direction of the upcoming season, given the events that unfolded at the end of season 2. His comments are certainly intriguing, so let’s dive into the spoilers.
The first season of Severance concluded with the four main characters rebelling against Lumon, only to return in the season 2 premiere. Although it felt like a significant jump, the show took the time to explain the events that led to their return. Essentially, it was a reset.
Season 2 ended with the remaining “innies” – Mark, Helly, and Dylan – rebelling once again, but on a much larger scale. They exposed one of Lumon’s biggest secrets, including the Cold Harbor project and the kidnapping of Gemma Scout, and Mark even killed one of Lumon’s executives, Mr. Drummond. Given the magnitude of these events, it’s challenging to imagine how season 3 could possibly see the characters returning to work without some significant changes.
When asked about this pattern, Erickson provided a thought-provoking response. “We like to blow up the formula at the end of each season and see if we can bring it back,” he said. “I don’t want to reveal too much about what season 3 will look like, but we wanted to do something that would blow up the world even more than in the first season. It’s a valid question that people will be asking: ‘Can the show continue in the format that we’ve been seeing, or will it need to transform into something else?'”
Erickson’s acknowledgement that season 3 could be “something else” suggests that it’s a possibility. Perhaps it will be, or perhaps it won’t. Maybe the show will simply return to the severed floor of Lumon, leaving the audience and characters to anxiously await the consequences of the events that transpired.
Although we don’t know what season 3 will bring, we have complete trust in the team. Thankfully, we now have confirmation that it’s officially happening, and we can only hope that it arrives as soon as possible.
