This week’s episode of Severance has taken density to a whole new level. Each scene is packed with so much information that any one of them could have been a standalone episode. As a result, we’re faced with a multitude of discoveries, truths, lies, revelations, and implications to unpack. Let’s dive into “Trojan’s Horse,” the fifth episode of Severance season two.
The episode picks up where we left off, with a mysterious man whistling “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” as he pushes a cart to Optics and Design. He’s after a set of dental tools, which he takes and wheels away into the dark Exports Hallway. The question on everyone’s mind is, why does Lumon need these tools, and could they be used for something sinister like altering or protecting someone’s identity?
Meanwhile, outie Mark is back home, taking pills and sipping on a mysterious white goo. His sister Devon calls, and we learn that the events of the previous episode took place over a single weekend. Mark’s outie “fell off a rope” and woke up wet, but we know this is a lie. The harrowing events that innie Mark experienced during the ORTBO are still a mystery, and Lumon’s cover-up is just the beginning.

Back at Lumon, Helena is having a meeting with Natalie and Mr. Drummond about the ORTBO. We learn that it’s been Helena, not Helly, on the severed floor this whole time. However, after Irv discovered this and tried to kill her, they’ve decided to let Helly return. Helena is against this, believing the innies are “animals,” but everyone thinks Helly’s presence is necessary to ensure Mark completes his work on Cold Harbor.
Helly returns to the severed floor, but she’s far behind. She hasn’t talked to anyone about what she saw during the Overtime Contingency, and she’s still trying to process everything. Before she can deal with any of that, Helly, Mark, and Dylan are brought into Mr. Milchick’s office to discuss everything that’s happened. The scene is intense, with Milchick confessing that Helena has been posing as Helly to do research for the company.
Milchick also confirms that Irv was permanently dismissed after trying to kill Helena. However, when Dylan asks if Irv is dead, Milchick explains that his outie is on a cruise. This is later revealed to be a lie. The conversation takes a dark turn when Milchick tells the story of “Gråkappan,” a nickname for King Charles XI of Sweden who would pose as a normal person to learn more about his kingdom. This is supposedly a tradition that Helena was following, but we’re not convinced.

The episode takes a morbid turn when Milchick asks Miss Huang to put together a “bereavement kit” for Irv. We learn that these kits are usually for innies who die on the floor, not off it. This raises questions about how many severed people have died in the offices and why they need full kits for it. The innies are referred to as subhumans and animals, which is a scary and dark commentary on the show.
Irv’s funeral is a surreal experience, with personalized mugs, signs, and even a cool animation. However, things take a turn when Dylan notices a poster in the room that says “Hang in there,” the same phrase Irv said to him before being “murdered.” Behind the poster, Dylan finds detailed instructions on how to get to the Exports Hallway, a final gift from his friend Irv.
As the episode comes to a close, we see Milchick’s performance review, which is a masterclass in tension and intimidation. He’s asked to explain the recent events with his severed employees, and we see the weight of his mistakes bearing down on him. The scene is both hilarious and terrifying, with Milchick’s newfound bluntness and the acknowledgment of Helena’s actions.

In the final moments of the episode, we see outie Mark experience a blip, and he finds himself at Lumon, hearing someone talk to his innie about his outie. He sees his wife, alive and well, in the bright white hallways of his work, and he breaks down in tears. The credits roll, leaving us with a million questions and a deep sense of unease.
This episode of Severance has been a game-changer, with each scene packed with information, implications, and tension. There’s so much to unpack, from the mysterious dental tools to the dark Exports Hallway, and the morbid bereavement kits. What does it all mean, and where is the show headed? The possibilities are endless, and we can’t wait to find out.
