The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), the market regulator, has issued an advisory, urging all regulated and registered entities to use only the ‘1600’ phone number series for service and transactional voice calls to their existing customers, starting immediately.

This move aims to strengthen investor protection and curb financial fraud, as stated in a Sebi release, which advises regulated or registered entities to comply with the latest guidelines set by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

“To enhance investor security and minimize the risk of fraud by unscrupulous entities using regular 10-digit numbers, investors should note the new ‘1600’ phone numbering series to easily identify and attend service and transactional calls from SEBI regulated/registered entities.

It has also suggested ways to report any Unsolicited Commercial Communications (UCC) or suspected fraudulent activities. Here’s how to do it:

1) If you receive spam or UCC, make a Do Not Disturb (DND) complaint through your telecom service provider’s app or website (e.g., Airtel, Jio, Vi, MTNL, BSNL, etc.), use the TRAI DND app, or call/SMS 1909.

2) If you receive suspected fraud communication, report it to the Chakshu Platform of the Department of Telecommunications (https://sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc/).

3) If you’ve already been a victim of fraud, report it to the Cyber Crime helpline number 1930 or website www.cybercrime.gov.in.
