Information is slowly emerging about Scream 7 as the horror series takes a detour back to its roots, reuniting original stars.
With Kevin Williamson, the original screenwriter, at the helm of a Scream film for the first time, he is reassembling the story with Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) as they confront the ghosts of their past, including friends and Ghostfaces, such as David Arquette, Scott Foley, and Matthew Lillard.
Some core cast members from the Scream reboot will also return, including Mason Gooding and Jasmine Savoy Brown reprising their roles as the Meeks twins. However, the film will jump forward in time for a compelling reason, as revealed by writer Guy Busick in an interview with ComicBook.com.
Busick elaborated on why the movie has become centered around Sidney, making the original final girl the lead once again.
“I don’t want to give away the reason Scream 7 had to be a Sidney movie, as there’s a compelling reason,” Busick told ComicBook. “In every Scream film, we must ask, ‘Why now? What is the series commenting on now?’ Scream is always engaging in a conversation with the audience about the state of movies, horror movies, and franchises in particular.”
He noted that Neve Campbell’s participation was crucial to the new installment’s themes. “We approached Neve Campbell and explained, ‘This is why. This is why Sidney now.’ Neve understood, and I initially pitched this idea to Kevin Williamson, who also got it, and then I pitched it to the studio.”
Busick also mentioned that the new movie will not be set in New York, unlike the previous film, and will feature a time jump.
“I don’t want to be the one to reveal the location,” Busick said, and he was vague about the time shift, but for seemingly less spoiler-related reasons. “It’s an unspecified amount of time after Scream VI. I might be contradicted by others, but in my mind, it’s more than two years. I would say at least two years, possibly more.”
Many fans are understandably upset that Melissa Barrera was controversially removed from leading the franchise’s rebirth, and the repercussions of this decision might impact interest in this sequel. It remains to be seen whether bringing back numerous past characters will be enough to compensate for potentially abandoning the Carpenter sisters storyline.
In the meantime, we wonder if the story will return to Woodsboro. Scream 7 is scheduled to hit theaters on February 27, 2026.
