Samsung Unveils its First XR Headset: A Closer Look at its Major Features

Samsung recently showcased its first XR headset, Project Moohan, at the Galaxy Unpacked event. The first hands-on video of the headset has now been published, giving us a closer look at its major hardware and software features.

Design and Features of Samsung XR Headset

The Korean tech giant, Samsung, did not provide a detailed look at the XR headset at the event. However, a popular tech YouTuber, Marques Brownlee (MKBHD), was given first access to try out Samsung’s first XR headset prototype, Project Moohan.

The headset is based on Android XR and features Gemini AI and Circle to Search. The company has built it with mixed materials, including metal, glass, plastic, and fabrics. Samsung placed at least eight front-facing cameras and two eye-tracing cameras on the inside. These cameras can be easily covered with a faceplate to reduce incoming light. The headset also features a power button, a volume rocker on the top, a touchpad on the right side, and an external battery pack using a USB Type-C power connector.

The device allows users to adjust the fit using the dial on the back of the device. Once worn, it automatically detects the user’s eyes and adjusts the lenses for optimal sharpness. The headset lets users control everything using their hands and fingers, a single pinch using the index finger and the thumb to open the app launch, which has all the popular Google apps available on Android devices.

The headset supports wireless peripherals like Bluetooth keyboards and mice and apps on the Google Play store. It allows users to arrange app windows side by side, resize them, and drag them around their virtual desktop, or they can just ask Gemini to do that for them.

Pricing and Launch of Samsung XR Headset

Samsung is looking forward to launching the XR Headset sometime by the end of this year. Reportedly, it could debut alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 in the early second half. The official price has yet to be disclosed, but it could be around $2,000, which is affordable as compared to Apple’s Vision Pro.

The full video of the headset is available below, but be careful: this is only a first taste of Project Moohan, which could still undergo important changes before it arrives on the market.
